Akita's castle is linked to the life of Satake Yoshinobu, who was on the losing side at the Battle of Sekigahara and was moved to what is now present-day Akita (Kubota domain) by the victorious Tokugawa Ieyasu. Satake's forced removal to Akita in the far north of Japan can be seen as a form of banishment from the centers of power that were Tokyo and Kyoto.
