November 3rd Bunka no hi - Culture Day
文化の日
Originally celebrated as the Meiji Emperor's birthday, in 1946 this day's name was changed to Culture Day. The government, and schools, award prizes for cultural achievement. Tea ceremony, flower arranging exhibitions and more modern artistic events are often scheduled for this day as are big nights out on the evening before and subsequent sleeping and drinking on the actual day.
